Gallery Protocol . The Hang & the Exhibition

Do:

- do not necessarily presume that your work will hang exactly where and how you wanted it. Be open to the unexpected.

- do view the show as a whole work, not just individual works hanging together.

- do be mindful and supportive of the gallery and the effort that they put in, particularly if they are volunteer run.

- do offer to work a day in the gallery while your work is showing, if you are not confident to be on your own, buddy with the person on ( this is more in relation to community galleries )

- do offer to have an artist talk (if that suits your personality).

- do you have sound with your work ? check out beforehand how it feels running in the gallery space non stop, being mindful of the staff. Can the volume be adjusted ? Can it be muted when no one is in the gallery ? Is it easy for the staff to operate ?

- do check if the exhibition is static or if the work is for sale off the wall ( maybe provide spares if this is the case).

- do provide a hanging photo if the work is unusual, you may think it's straight forward and or plan to 'tell' the gallery 'how to hang it' when you drop off your work, but keep in mind there might be 50 other artists dropping work off and 'just telling' the staff what they want.

- do provide your own packaging and hanging sheets for the customers if your work is unusual.

Again I've left out the Don'ts ... I'm hoping the Do's will override the Don'ts ... 😊👌
